A handwritten book is called a Manuscript.

Before the development of the printing press, there was an old and rich tradition of producing handwritten manuscripts.

Manuscripts are very fragile, old, expensive and rare. These were out of reach of the general public.

Before the development of the printing press, only the manuscript served as a book. Manuscripts were an intact storehouse of rare knowledge of our ancestors, knowledge can be gained easily by studying them.
