PMGKAY is a government initiative introduced in 2020 as a pandemic relief measure. It provides 5 kilograms of free foodgrains per month to 81.35 crore poor citizens in addition to the subsidized foodgrain under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The government has decided to extend the scheme for five more years to strengthen food security, ensure accessibility and affordability of foodgrains, and maintain uniformity across states.
