Describe the main features of the Indian Constitution.

After independence, the constitution of India was established to establish a democratic system of governance, in India The preamble to the constitution clearly states that India shall be a democratic republic. Following are the four characteristics of Indian democracy.

Adult Voting Right : India is an indirect democratic country. Governance is conducted by representatives. For this arrangements have been made for fair election. It is through elections that the people choose their representatives. In India, every man and woman who is 18 years of age or more has the right to vote without any discrimination.

Parliamentary Democracy : Another feature of Indian democracy is that there is a parliamentary democracy. Although the president is the highest official of the executive, yet he is the nominal head. The real executive power is in the hands of the council of ministers, headed by the Prime Minister. The council of Ministers is collectively responsible to the parliament for its functions. In this sense, there is a parliamentary democracy in India.

Democracy is based on the principle of fundamental rights, freedom and equality of citizens. That is why the citizens of India have been given fundament rights by the constitution and the responsibility of their protection has been entrusted to the Supreme Court.

Independent$ Judiciary To protect Indian democracy there is a system of Independent and impartial judiciary. The responsibility of protecting the constitution has been entrusted to the Supreme Court.
