Lone pairs are the electron pairs which do not participate in the bond formation. These are localized on the central atom and occupy more space as compared to the bond pairs. This causes greater repulsions between lone pairs of electrons as compared to the lone pair-bond pair and bond pair-bond pair repulsions.
