(i) First the car travels a distance of 30 kilometres at a speed of 40 find out the time taken by the car to travel this distance.

(ii) Next the car travels a distance of 30 km at a speed of 20 km/h. We will also find out the time taken by the car to travel this distance. In this case :

We can get the total time taken by the car for the whole journey by adding the above two time values t₁ and t₂. Thus,

Thus, the average speed of the car for the whole journey is 26.6 kilometres per hour.
