Following are the main factors of forest destruction —

1. A major reason for the decline of forests in India is the expansion of agricultural land. Tribal areas in north eastern and Central India have led to forest degradation, due to shifting (Jhum) cultivation or slash and burn farming.
2. Forests have also suffered a lot due to major development plans.
3. For animal feed and fuel in the destruction of forests and wild life the use of wood has also played a significant role.
4. Rail routes, roads construction, industrial development and urbanization have also destroyed forest expansion on a large scale.
