There are different types of roads in India. Roads can be divided into national highways, district roads, village roads and border roads. Their description is as follows:

(A ) National Highways : National Highways work to connect different parts of the country. The provinces, National Highway No. 7 is the longest National Highway in the country.

This highway is spread over a length of 2369 km. up to Kanyakumari via Varanasi, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madurai.

The responsibility of construction and maintenance of these highways rests with the central Government. These are a total of 228 national highways in the country with total length of 66590 km.

In order to boost the economic development in the country the government has started a comprehensive National Highway Project, which are as follows:

  1. Golden Quadrilateral Highway :  The construction work of about 5846 km. long 6 lane roads connecting the four major metro political cities of India, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata is in progress by the Central Government.
  2. East-West and North-South Corridors : Road Corridors Connecting silchar in the East, porabandar in the West, Srinagar in the North and Kanyakumari in the South are under construction east west corridor. The total lengths is 3640 km. and the total length of North South Corridor 4016 km.
  3. Express Ways : The speed of trains is very fast on these roads built for the purpose of reaching the destinations in a short time. The vehicle plying on these have to pay additional toll tax, These four lane estate of the art roads include Kolkata, Dum Dum Highway, Ahmedabad Highway, Mumbai West Cast Highway. The Mumbai Pune highway is the first international standard highway in the country.
  4. It is proposed to make 380 km. long national highway four lane connecting 10 major ports of the country.

(B) State Highways : State highways link various state capitals to works to connect with district headquarters. The responsibility of building and maintaining these roads rest with the state government.

(C) District Roads : District roads serve to connect the various district headquarters and cities of the states in the total roads of the country. The share of 14%. The responsibility of maintaining all these roads rests with the state governments.

(D) Rural Roads : These roads connect different villages with each other. These roads will be developed under the Prime Minister's road extension scheme.

(E) Border Roads : These are very important rods. These are manufactured in the border areas of the country. The responsibility of their construction and maintenance rests with the Border Roads organization. In the event up war, the importance of these roads increase.
