Kinetic Theory of Gases

The kinetic theory of gases correlates the macroscopic properties of gases e.g., pressure, temperature etc. to the microscopic properties of gas molecules e.g. speed, momentum, kinetic energy of molecules etc. The kinetic theory of gases is based on the following assumptions:

  • The intermolecular forces are negligible during a collision.
  • The volume of the molecules themselves can be neglected compared with the volume occupied by the gas.
  • The time occupied by a collision is negligible compared with the time spent by a molecule between collisions and between collisions a molecule moves with uniform velocity.
