Austria was the biggest obstacle in the unification of North Italy and Germany.
Since there was basically nationalist sentiment behind the unification and the Austrian chancellor 'Meternich' was fiercely reactionary. He suppressed all movements or efforts for the purpose of unification of Italy and Germany in response to the repressive policy, the feeling of nationalism in Italy and Germany increased.
After the fall of Metternich in Austria, the people of Italy and Germany, seeing the biggest obstacle in their way, again tried to reunify with heavy enthusiasm and finally succeeded.
