What do you mean by Green Revolution?

Green Revolution means revolution changes in agricultural production in the field of unprecedented productivity due to various technology and institutional reforms.

By the green revolution there is a very rapid and permanent increase in the amount of agricultural production.

The Green Revolution started with the cultivation of wheat. Under this, indirect increasing ford production was done by extensive use of improved varieties of seeds, hybridized improved seeds, chemical fertilizers, irrigation, pesticides etc. This proved to be a milestone in food production. Green revolution took place in India after 1966 AD.

When India became independent, these was a shortage of food grains. India was forced to import food grains from other countries.

After the green revolution. India became self-sufficient in food grains and was in a position to export agricultural products.

In 1966-67, the production of food grains in India was only 560 lakh tones. Now it has increased to over 2,500 lakh tones per annum, in the early 1960s.

Indian agriculture was given special priority in the five year plans.
