The Washerman is a person whose trade is washing dirty clothes. He earns his bread by washing dirty clothes of the people in the neighbourhood. He is an important member of our society. The washerman is generally a poor man. He does not earn enough as remuneration for washing dirty clothes.
The washerman collects the dirty clothes from different houses in the neighbourhood. Some washermen keep donkey for carrying the bundle. He boils the clothes in a solution of water and soda. Then he takes them to a river or tank either on his head or on the back of a donkey. There he washes the boild clothes by beating them on a piece of wood or stone. While washing the clothes he sings a song too. The washed clothes are spread in the sun for drying. Then the washeman brings those washed clothes home either on his head or an-ass. He irons them in the night. Nextday the clothes are returned to the customers.A Some times the washerman fails to bring back clothes on due date. Some clothes are damaged. He often commits mistake in returning clothes to the right customers.
The washermen is a useful member of our society. He serves the society by washing dirty clothes. Thus he helps us to put on clean clothes. He labours hard, night and day. In cities and big towns some washermen have opened laundries. They donot go from door to door to collect dirty clothes. People of means send their dirty clothes to the laundries and take back on the fixed date on payment of charges.
The life of the washermen is miserable. He does not get due respect in our society. Previously he was considered untouchable. Now untouchability has been abolished. Still they are treated as backward. This is not proper. We should love and respect them. They deserve our sympathy.
