India is a land of colourful festivals. Festivals break the monotony of life. The Durga Puja is a religious festival of the Hindus. It is celebrated in all parts of the country. It begins on the 16th day at Ashwin and lasts for ten days. People worship the goddess Durga all these days. It is also known as Dussehra or Vijayadashami. There are several stories behind this festival. It is said that Ram worshipped the goddess Durga when he had to fight with the Demon king Ravan. He killed Ravana on the 10th day of the war and gave his kingdom to his brother Vibhishana. The Durga Puja is celebrated in the memory of Ram's victory. There is another story according to which the goddess Durga killed a demon king Mahishasura on the twenty fifth day of ashwin.
