Explain: During digestion, food is broken down into simpler substances.

Food like rice, potato and bread are made up of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are further broken down to glucose.

Glucose during respiration (inhalation of oxygen) is oxidized with the liberation of energy as shown below:

$\mathrm{C}_6 \mathrm{H}_{12} \mathrm{O}_6(\mathrm{aq})(\mathrm{Glucose})+6 \mathrm{O}_2(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow 6 \mathrm{CO}_2(\mathrm{aq})+6 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}(l)+\text { energy }$

Thus, respiration is an Exothermic Process.
