Following are the salient features of Indian rail transport —

(i) Indian Railways system is the largest in Asia and the third largest in the world.

(ii) Till 31 March, 2007, Indian railways had 6909 stations 8153 locomotives 45360 passenger trains and 1905 other passenger trains.

(iii) Metro rail services is being provided in Kolkata and Delhi under Metro Rail.

(iv) A.C.D. (ACD) arrangement has been made in the engine to prevent accident of trains.

(v) DMU, EMU and MEMU rail services are available for daily commuters in major cities.

(vi) The most unique feature of Indian Railways is the running of Jeevan Rekha. This trains running from July 16, 1991 is the world's first mobile hospital.
