Municipal council is an important unit. Thats why the city council has to do a lot of work. There are two types of functions of the municipal council compulsory and voluntary. Compulsory functions are those which are required to be performed by the city council. Voluntary functs are such functions which the city council perform at will.

The essential functions are —

• cleaning the city
• arranging drinking water
• building and repairing roads
• lighting the streets and lanes
• cleaning the drains
• management of primary education
• Fire protection
• Registration of birth and death certificates.

Optional work —

• building a near road
• building houses for the poor
• providing electricity.
