Many language are spoken in India. Therefore, Hindi was given the status of the national language in the Indian constitution. It is the language of 40% of the population. According to the constitution, despite the probability of the use of English in the language of official business, the use of English continued due to demand. There was a fierce demonstration in Tamilnadu regarding this demand. The government resolved this dispute by allowing Hindi as well as English to be used for official purposes.

In India, based on the information of 1991, more than 1500 different languages have been registered as their mother tongue in the census. Some of these languages were grouped together. For example, Bhojpur, Maghi, Bundelkhandi, Chhatisgarhi, Rajasthani, Bhili etc. were also included in Hindi even after the's grouping 144 major languages were found of these 22 were placed in the eighth list of the Indian Constitution. Hence it is called scheduled languages.
