Describe the distribution of cotton, textile industry in India.

Cotton Textile Factories in India were established in 1854 by Cowasji Nanabhai Davar in Mumbai. It is the largest organized and comprehensive industry in India. Most of the cotton textile mills are located in Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, UP, and Punjab.

• Maharashtra : It has the first place in the production of cotton cloth. These are cotton textile factories in Mumbai, Pune, Amravati, Sholpure, Sangi, Jalgaon, Kolhapur. Mumbai is called the Capital of Cotton Textiles.
• Gujarat : Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Porbandar, Bharuch are the major cotton textile industry center. Ahmedabad is called the Boston of the East. Fine cloth is made here.
• West Bengal : Here the industry has been established keeping in mind of market. The major centers are Howrah, Hooghly, 24 Parganas, Murshidabad etc.
• Tamil Nadu : It has the largest number of cotton textile mills. The major centers are in Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, Tirunelveli etc.

Apart from this centers of cotton Industries are also established in Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra in UP, Amritsar, Ludhiana in Punjab. Gaya in Bihar, Patna, Dumraon, Siliguri etc.
