Uttarakhand in the hilly areas of Garhwal in the 1970s, The people of India started a movement against the commercial felling of forests which became famous as Chipko Movement. The villagers used to stick with the trees to save them from being cut down.

This movement was led by Chandi Prasad Bhatt and many women.

Many people started joining this movement. This movement had its impact on different regions of India. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna also joined this movement.

The biggest impact of this movement was that the deforestation of the Himalayas was stopped for 15 years.

Today the Chipko Movement has reached the foreign soil by launching all the boundaries.
